It is to the Amboise family, and in particular to Charles de Chaumont d'Amboise, governor of Italy, that we owe the building of the castle, which began in 1473. On the facade, we also find the Talking arms of Charles de Chaumont: 2 interlaced "C" surmounting a flaming mountain for "Chaud Mont".
Many owners have subsequently succeeded, including the Duke of Charost, creator of the Berry Canal which was generously revered by the local population. He was so appreciated that during the French Revolution, when he was imprisoned in Bourges and then transferred to Paris to be guillotined there, the population of Meillant and its surroundings demanded his release. All the Berry had mobilized to obtain his return to the castle. This explains why the castle was not damaged during the revolution.
The castle was then passed by marriage to the family of Rochechouart Mortemarts still occupy the castle today. Rochechouart family Mortemarts is one of the oldest families in France.
As an anecdote, Madame de Montespan, mistress of Louis XIV, was a Mortemart.
